Kendo Beginners Course - September 2026

Kendo Beginners Course - September 2026

Overview

A full day introduction to traditional Japanese fencing.

Kendo ('way of the sword') is a martial art descended from kenjutsu (classical sword arts) used by the samurai warriors of feudal Japan. It's a traditional style of fencing that's practised for fitness and personal development.

If you're a beginner or looking to return to after a break, this course is the perfect introduction to kendo in preparation for joining our regular club practice.

Our experienced instructors will guide you through the basics of kendo, from mastering the proper stance to wielding the bamboo sword with precision. Sign up and join us for a fun and rewarding experience.

By the end of this course, you'll be ready to safely strike an opponent/partner, and will be well on the way to practicing in armour. The course is a pre-requisite for those wanting to join our regular club practice on Tuesday evenings.

Venue: Ashton Park Sports Centre (School Gym), Blackmoor’s Lane, BS3 2JL

Date: Saturday 19th September 2026

Time: 10am -4pm

The cost of the course is £50. Everything you need to get started will be provided - including the loan of a shinai (bamboo sword) - just bring yourself and wear clothing that's suitable for exercise.

After the course, you'll be able to join our main practice (7pm Tuesdays at Ashton Park Sports Centre).

This course is organised by Bristol Kendo Club, one of the oldest clubs in the country, which is affiliated with the UK's governing body, the British Kendo Association. For more information, visit bristolkendo.co.uk

(We suggest that people thinking of joining the course come to observe one of our Tuesday practices in order to get an idea of what is involved, although this is not a firm requirement.)
