Dancing the Dark: A Mystery Movement Journey (Los Angeles)

Dancing the Dark: A Mystery Movement Journey (Los Angeles)

Overview

Ecstatic Dance meets Contact Improv meets a Guided Journey into the Unknown

✨ No mirrors. No performance. No "how do I look?" ✨

What happens when you remove sight... and let your body become the guide?

Something extraordinary happens in the dark. The self-consciousness falls away. The inner critic goes quiet. And for the first time in maybe a long time — you stop dancing for others and start dancing for truth.

Dancing in the Dark is a somatic movement journey unlike anything you've experienced. Part Ecstatic Dance, part Contact Improvisation, part guided ritual — all held inside a safe, consent-based container designed to help you feel more alive in your body than you have in years.

🌀 What Actually Happens Here?

This is not a dance class. There's no choreography to learn, no moves to get right, no way to do it wrong.

The evening unfolds in two parts. First, The Journey — a surrender-based blindfolded movement practice called Latihan (rooted in the Indonesian Subud tradition). In simple terms: it's letting the body move you, not the mind, not the ego. Then, once the blindfolds come off, the floor opens into Ecstatic Dance — eyes open, full movement, no darkness required.

New to blindfolded work? Ease into the Journey, or simply arrive after the darkness practice at 9 PM for the estatic dance. Either way, you belong on this floor.

We bring in blindfolded and low-light movement to:

  • Quiet the social brain that's always monitoring how you look
  • Deepen your somatic intelligence — your body's inner knowing
  • Dissolve performance identity and drop into raw authenticity
  • Open a state of connection that's almost impossible to access when you can see everyone watching

People often describe it as: meditation that moves. Dance that heals. Ritual without religion.

✨ Your Evening, Unfolded

7:30 PM — Arrival & Connection Meet others, settle in, get oriented. No need to be "on." Just arrive as you are.

8:00 PM — Opening Circle & Consent Guidelines We create safety together. You'll learn how touch works in this space, how to engage or decline at any moment, and simple navigation tools for moving through the dark with confidence.

8:00 – 9:00 PM — The Journey: Guided Blindfolded Movement You'll move through phases: grounding and stillness, solo self-discovery, optional partnered exploration using contact improv principles, an ecstatic build and release, and a soft integration landing. Music guides you. Your body leads you. Facilitators hold the space.

9:00 PM – Midnight — Open Ecstatic Dance Blindfolds off, lights low, the floor is yours. Free-form ecstatic dance for everyone — whether you did the Journey or just arrived.

Closing Circle Space to share, witness, and integrate what moved through you.

12:00 AM — Event Ends

🔄 Every Journey Is Different

Because the people in the room are never the same, this experience is never the same twice.

The field of the evening — the energy, the wisdom, the places you get taken — depends entirely on who shows up that night, what they're carrying, and what they're ready to release. A different room produces a different journey. Every time.

  • If you've been before — come back. You'll go somewhere new. Many of our regulars say each gathering cracks them open in a completely different place.
  • If you've only ever been a solo mover — try the partnered exploration. Or vice versa. Each mode carries its own revelations.
  • If you bring a friend — their presence changes the field for everyone, including you.

This isn't an event you attend once and check off. It's a practice. A community. You're always welcome back.

✨ Who Is This For?

This event is for you if:

  • You want to feel free in your body — truly free — maybe for the first time in a long time
  • You're curious about somatic work, ecstatic dance, or embodied movement but don't know where to start
  • You're a seasoned mover, yoga teacher, or bodyworker who wants to go deeper into authentic, non-performative movement
  • You're carrying something — stress, grief, a decision, a longing — and you know your body holds answers your mind hasn't found yet
  • You want genuine, unguarded human connection without the usual social masks

No dance experience needed. No partner needed. No prerequisites — just a willingness to feel.

And if you are an experienced practitioner — this process has a way of meeting you exactly where you are and taking you somewhere new regardless of how much you already know. The dark is a great equalizer.

⭐ What Past Attendees Are Saying

"I put on the blindfold and within five minutes I was sobbing — not from sadness, but from relief. Like my body had been waiting years for permission to just... move without being watched. I've never felt that kind of freedom. I drove home in silence and just let it land. I'll be at every single one of these." — Tamara V., North Park, San Diego

"I'm a yoga teacher. I thought I was pretty comfortable in my body. The blindfold humbled me completely — in the best possible way. Without my eyes, I had no idea what I 'should' look like, so I just… moved. Honestly moved, maybe for the first time ever. Something in me reorganized that night. I felt it the next morning." — Renata K., RYT-500, Encinitas, CA

"The movement journey just took over. I laughed, I cried, I had a moment of pure euphoria during the ecstatic build that I can only describe as electric. One of the best nights of my year." — Julian R., Mission Hills, San Diego

"I came in terrified of the partnered part. I almost didn't do it. Shiva J's consent framework made me feel so safe that I eventually said yes — and it was the most tender, respectful, genuinely beautiful experience of non-verbal connection I've ever had with a stranger. We didn't exchange a word. We didn't need to." — Mei-Lin T., Ocean Beach, San Diego

"I've done ecstatic dance dozens of times. This was different. The blindfold removes the last layer of self-consciousness that even ecstatic dance doesn't fully dissolve. I found a rawness in my movement I didn't know was still hiding. Shiva J holds space with such warmth and skill — you feel completely safe going deep." — Desmond A., Hillcrest, San Diego

"I came alone, barely knowing anyone. By the closing circle I felt like I'd spent years with these people. Something about moving together in the dark — without seeing, without performing — just strips everything down to the essential. Pure presence. Pure connection. I left feeling like myself again. Like the real me." — Sofia M., Point Loma, San Diego

💸 The Bliss Guarantee

Show up. Surrender. If you don't leave feeling free — you don't pay.

I have held this space enough times to know what it does to people. And I am so confident that this journey will shift something real in you — that I'm backing it with a personal promise.

If you attend the full evening and don't feel that something genuinely moved, opened, or liberated in you — find me at the end of the night. I will refund your ticket on the spot. No questions. No awkwardness. Just gratitude for trusting the dark.

🤝 Touch, Consent & Safety

Consent is the foundation of everything we do here — not as a rule imposed from outside, but as a living practice we build together at the start of every evening.

  • Touch is always optional — you can experience the entire evening without being touched by anyone
  • We teach a simple, clear consent language at the opening circle so everyone knows how to communicate — and how to honor each other's boundaries
  • Facilitators actively hold the space throughout the evening
  • You are sovereign over your experience, always

This event is open to legal adults (18+) only.

🌟 About Your Facilitator — Shiva J

Shiva J is a somatic facilitator and embodiment guide devoted to authentic connection, nervous system healing, and transformational group experiences. He blends consent-based intimacy practices, movement ritual, and presence work to help people reconnect with the truth in their body and the power of the present moment.

With deep roots in holistic wellness, tantra-informed practices, Kundalini yoga, somatic bodywork, and men's work, Shiva creates spaces that are playful, safe, and deeply liberating — where you can show up exactly as you are and leave more fully yourself.

When he's not facilitating, you'll find him at ecstatic dance, drum circles, or hiking local trails with a dirty chai in hand.
