Vizcaya Late: Spooky Edition with Books & Books

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark that preserves the Miami estate of agricultural industrialist James Deering to engage our community and its visitors in learning through the arts, history and the environment. Built between 1914 and 1922, Vizcaya is one of the most intact remaining examples from this era in United States history, when the nation’s most successful entrepreneurs built estates inspired by the stately homes of Europe. Vizcaya features a Main House filled with a decorative art collection, 10 acres of formal gardens, a rockland hammock (native forest), mangrove shore, and a historic village that is being restored to tell Vizcaya’s full story and provide additional spaces for programs and community outreach, including those on agriculture. Vizcaya has been a community hub since it opened to the public in 1953; it currently welcomes about 300,000 visitors annually.Located on Biscayne Bay at 3251 South Miami Avenue, Vizcaya is open Wednesday through Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. This special Halloween-themed edition of Vizcaya Late invites guests to explore the connections between literature and art through immersive experiences in this historic campus.Enjoy an evening of spooky seasonal activities, community connection, and cinematic storytelling under the stars, all set against the backdrop of Vizcaya’s timeless architecture and lush landscape. Guests are invited to embrace the magic of the museum after hours and discover stories that inspire curiosity, wonder, and a little bit of fright.Spooky Shorts from Early CinemaThroughout the evening, guests can enjoy a selection of early spooky and fantastical films, including The Haunted House (1921), A Trip to the Moon (1902), The Skeleton Dance (1929), and The Witch (La Fée Carabosse) (1906). Together, these short films offer a glimpse into the imaginative worlds, visual effects, and storytelling traditions of early cinema.Literary Matchmaking with Books &amp; BooksGet matched with your next spooky read! In partnership with the Books &amp; Books Literary Foundation, Vizcaya Late will feature a literary matchmaking experience exploring a range of horror and spooky subgenres, from gothic romance and cult horror to slashers, mad science, supernatural tales, and more.Everyone is welcome to participate in the matchmaking experience. Want to take home a mystery book selected just for you? Add a **Mystery Book** to your ticket. After purchasing the add-on, you’ll receive a questionnaire designed to help us match you with a spooky read based on your interests and reading preferences.Important details:<ul><li>Questionnaires must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on October 10, 2026.</li><li>Your mystery book will be available for pickup at Vizcaya Late.</li><li>Books will not be available for purchase onsite.</li><li>Mystery Book add-ons are available while supplies last.</li></ul> Vintage-Inspired Pumpkin DecoratingGet creative with a mini pumpkin decorating activity inspired by vintage Jack-o’-lantern designs and early Halloween traditions. Guests can draw inspiration from historic patterns, faces, and seasonal imagery to create their own unique take on the classic Jack-o’-lantern. Sponsored in part by the State of Florida through the Divison of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts.
