South Asia Institute presents The Living Songs of Tagore, an intimate evening of live music, poetry, storytelling, and reflection led by recording artist, educator, and Rabindrasangeet vocalist Maitreyee Chakraborty.
Accompanied by live instrumentalists, Maitreyee will guide audiences through the emotional and philosophical world of Rabindranath Tagore. His songs and poems explore experiences that remain deeply recognizable today: love and longing, intimacy and separation, nature and spirituality, resilience, belonging, and the search for meaning.
Before each song, Maitreyee will share personal reflections on the composition and the feelings, memories, and questions it evokes. These stories create a bridge between the music and the audience, revealing Tagore’s work not as something fixed in the past, but as a living artistic tradition that continues to speak across generations.
Selected poems and English translations will be projected on screen, making the program accessible to audiences regardless of their familiarity with Bengali language or culture.
The performance is designed for both longtime admirers of Tagore and those experiencing Rabindrasangeet for the first time. Through music, narration, poetry, and shared reflection, The Living Songs of Tagore invites listeners to encounter Tagore as a voice of compassion, beauty, spiritual inquiry, and human connection.
About the Artist
Maitreyee Chakraborty is a Massachusetts-based recording artist, Rabindrasangeet vocalist, educator, and founder of Tagore, Me, and You, a community-centered arts initiative dedicated to making Tagore’s work accessible across cultures and generations.
She has performed throughout the United States and in Kolkata, India, including appearances at the North American Bengali Conference. Her concerts and educational programs bring together music, literature, storytelling, and English narration to create welcoming and meaningful cultural experiences.
