A Strategic Communications Workshop
The Office of the Vice President for Research presents a one-day workshop for the UVA research community: faculty, postdocs and staff who want to communicate their research more effectively. Through faculty panels, journalist perspectives, and hands-on work, participants will learn how research reaches public audiences, how to communicate their work clearly, and how to build a cohesive academic brand.
A science communicator and journalist with a PhD in microbiology, Maddie Sofia, founded and hosted Short Wave, NPR's daily science podcast. They open the day and lead an extended working session where participants will develop a ready-to-use communication strategy tailored to their own research.
Sessions cover media engagement, writing for platforms like The Conversation, and aligning communication efforts with professional goals such as funding, collaboration and recruitment.

Welcome + Keynote
Join award-winning scientist-turned-journalist Maddie Sofia to talk about what makes a good source, how to prepare to speak to journalists, and techniques you can use during an interview to get your message across. Maddie will share examples from interviews conducted during their time at NPR Short Wave and Science Friday. Maddie Sofia is a science communicator and journalist, and their practice focuses on identity, community-building, and behavior-change research. They earned their Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Rochester in 2016. They were the founding host of NPR’s daily science podcast “Short Wave”. These days, they consult, teach science communication workshops, and travel the country to mentor scientists and journalists.
