How do you ask someone about their most traumatic moments? You don’t need to know all the details to support survivors, though some professions require you to ask questions. This workshop shares survivor-informed practices for journalists, investigators, researchers, lawyers, and anyone who interviews survivors. This workshop also benefits survivors who are looking to gain a better understanding of the interview process and how to advocate for themselves. These methods help to limit retraumatization for victims and interviewers, as well as produce more comprehensive testimonies. You will walk away with tangible methods to strengthen your work and approach survivors with care.This workshop will explore:<ul><li>Trauma survival responses and how they may show up during the reporting and interviewing process</li><li>Practical tips for survivor-informed, ethical interviewing</li><li>Vicarious trauma that interviewers may experience and how to navigate it</li><li>Advice for caring for yourself while covering traumatic topics and centering survivors</li><li>Green and red flags</li><li>Engagement and group activities to strengthen your skills</li></ul>You can expect:<ul><li>A mix of presentation slides, conversation, and group engagement (for folks who want to participate)</li></ul><ul><li>Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions</li><li>This event will not be recorded</li></ul>Both survivors and journalists can benefit from this workshop.We ask that you be 18+ to participate .The workshop is facilitated by Kat Tenbarge &amp; Lauren Weingarten. Survivor Stories Deserve Better developed by M. Colleen McDaniel, Kat Tenbarge, and Lauren Weingarten.Kat Tenbarge (she/her) is an independent journalist who reports on the intersection of sexual violence and internet culture. She runs the newsletter Spitfire News and has also written for NBC News, WIRED, The Verge, Business Insider, and more. Her coverage has surfaced sexual assault allegations and pushed back against online smear campaigns targeting victims.Lauren Weingarten (she/her) is a survivor, a victim advocate, trauma support specialist, and community builder. She is the voice and founder of MTMV Community Support Network, one of the first social media-based support communities established for survivors &amp; supporters of survivors.
