Black Woman, Indeed - Jada S. Dixon

Black Woman, Indeed is a theatrical spoken-word meditation on Black womanhood, identity, survival, memory, and reclamation. Built from interviews, personal reflection, and conversations with Black and biracial women across generations, the work combines intimate stories, cultural memory, ritual, humor, music, soundscape, and embodiment. Through childhood, hair, masking, code-switching, professional spaces, beauty politics, endurance, vulnerability, and self-reclamation, Jada explores what it means to carry visibility and invisibility simultaneously. The piece examines the emotional, physical, and spiritual labor Black women are expected to hold silently—and the cost of constantly translating oneself for survival. Moving between personal and collective experience, its tone can be intimate, sharp, humorous, confrontational, vulnerable, ritualistic, and prophetic. The work does not seek easy resolution or comfort. It seeks witness, truth, accountability, recognition, and a space where Black women can be seen fully—in their complexity, humanity, rage, joy, tenderness, contradictions, and becoming.
