A teacher stands at a crossroads. She loves teaching and all the joy it has brought her—but has the profession finally broken her? Can she continue fighting through, or is tonight the night she finally says, “Fuck them kids”? Drawing from Katrina D. RiChard’s nearly twenty years of service as an educator, F&$ Dem Kids!* brings her two passions—education and theatre—together as a way of processing two decades inside the classroom. The work arrives amid attacks on public education from multiple directions, growing teacher burnout, and declining numbers of college students entering the profession. Katrina uses her own experiences to speak what educators are feeling but may not always have the space to say. Rather than simply walking away from education, the piece searches for healing and a way forward: how do we make public education better without sacrificing the teachers who deliver it?
