A Sociological Approach to Body Image Distress
Factors That Interfere with Embodiment in Clinical Practice
An exploration of body image distress and disembodiment through a sociological and systemic lens. This webinar examines how historical context, social power structures, stigma, and capitalist influences contribute to the development and maintenance of body image distress, disembodiment, and eating disorders. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the broader cultural forces that shape individuals relationships with their bodies and consider implications for clinical practice.
Angela Yonan is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Primary Therapist at Skyway Behavioral Health. She has experience providing treatment across inpatient, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care, with a specialization in eating disorders and co-occurring mood, anxiety, and trauma- related disorders. Angela is passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based care through a weight-inclusive lens informed by the Health at Every Size® (HAES) framework. Her clinical approach integrates Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT (RO DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to support clients in building meaningful and sustainable change. Her background insociology informs her interest in examining body image, eating disorders, and mental health within broader social, cultural, and systemic contexts.
