August at Cafe Alma: Paper + PrintPaper + Print is an exploration of paper-centric art workshops. Join us for cyanotype, bookbinding, and collage classes! Hosted at Cafe Alma!Workshop Location: Cafe Alma: 888 Ines Ave, SF, CA- 94124 Workshop DescriptionIn this workshop, we’ll explore the art of Japanese Stab-Binding. If you enjoy Sashiko, you'll love this bookbinding equivalent. Zoe will teach you how to create two unique handmade journals or sketchbooks to take home using handpainted papers.Zoe will give an overview and demonstration of Japanese stab-binding techniques and common book-binding tools, and participants will experiment with various Japanese stab-binding binding patterns. We’ll cover how to align &amp; prepare pages, make jigs for consistent binding holes, and handle waxed thread. We’ll source our book and cover paper directly from Zoe's handmade paper collection and SCRAP, so there’ll be a ton of possibilities for unique journal colors and sizes.All supplies are included, and no prior experience is necessary! Open to all ages. About the ArtistThe workshop is led by <a href="https://www.zoespikerman.com/" title="https://www.zoespikerman.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoe Spikerman</a>, a San Francisco-based artist working across print, paper, and textile crafts. Often using foraged, recycled, and naturally-dyed paper and fiber, she’s especially interested in how the spirit of an artwork is shaped by the life and history of its materiality. Influenced by the ecological ethos of Hawaiʻi, where she was raised among agrarian communities, her artwork explores our complex relationship to the natural world, examining, with both reverence and disdain, the forces that obscure our interconnection as stewards of the Earth. She earned her BFA in Print Media from the California College of Arts, and currently works as an editorial associate for<a href="https://www.artbae.info/" title="https://www.artbae.info/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> ArtBae</a>.@zoespikermanAbout SCRAPSCRAP is a non-profit organization working at the intersection of arts, education and the environment.
