Overview

Bridging kaleidoscope pop with psych-rock, Triptides are sure to cause a stir at Substation featuring support from local New Age Healers.

Substation presents:

Triptides - After a few years of cosmic keyboard pop, Triptides decided that it was time to get back to their 1960s roots on Past Lives. Their idea was to create an album that featured a 12-string guitar (either electric or acoustic) on every track, much like their heroes the Byrds did on their first records (the lead off track is an honest cover of the Byrd’s 1965 tune “She Don’t Care About Time”).

Of course, most of these songs deal with love - but through a kaleidoscopic pop lens that offers a new sonic interpretation of that singular human connection. Some songs deal with the darkness that comes before the dawn, other songs explore the fleeting moments of perfection that we’re all trying to hold on to.

At its core, holding on to those moments is what Past Lives is all about. It’s about being here right now and letting life happen. Living with the love we share, the things we lose, and the days that keep on dawning no matter which side you’re on. You may even get the feeling you lived some of this before.

You’re beginning to experience Past Lives.

New Age Healers - Seattle’s New Age Healers return with their fifth full-length, Blowing Smoke Through the Choir, an expansive evolution of the shoegaze-psych hybrid they sharpened on 2024’s The Spin Out. This time, the band pushes further outward sonically and structurally bringing new collaborators into their dense, dreamlike orbit.

For the first time, frontman Owen Murphy shares songwriting duties with guitarist Jeramy Koepping, whose ideas form the backbone of four tracks. The addition of vocalist Elisha Nottingham deepens the band’s already immersive palette, threading new textures through their signature swell of ethereal guitars, muscular rhythm section, and luminous synth work.

Blowing Smoke Through the Choir also marks the band’s first collaboration with producer and mixer John Goodmanson, whose presence adds both clarity and weight. “It was really interesting working with John, because besides being an outrageously great guy and extraordinarily talented, his resume blasts out of the pages,” notes Murphy.   “He's the guy that mixes or records Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, and he's worked with a local band here called Suzzallo that is incredible. So I was just so grateful that we got to spend time and to work with him and hear his ideas, and have the opportunity to trust him to help us make something great.”The album features notable guest appearances from Greg Bertens (Film School) on “The Fastest Slow” and Valerie Green (Karate Guns & Tanning) on “Sunday Bed.” Both contributions feel organic rather than ornamental, folding seamlessly into the album’s emotional architecture.

In an age defined by instability - political, economic, existential - New Age Healers don’t pretend to resolve the tension. Instead, Blowing Smoke Through the Choir sits inside it, finding fleeting beauty and hard-won connection in the noise.
