The Canova International Architect Encounter, 2026

The 21st Canova International Architect Encounter represents a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, experiences, and visions, creating a global bridge between different cultures, techniques, and perspectives. The Ghesc project, one of the pillars of our work, is a tangible example of how architecture can be a means for the valorization and rebirth of local communities. Our commitment to sustainability and conservation is not only linked to the past but looks with determination toward the future. We firmly believe that the recovery and valorization of architectural heritage can serve as the fulcrum for innovative initiatives that embrace culture, education, research, and social innovation. We hope that this event will inspire new generations of architects and urban planners to pursue these same values.

25 years ago the Canova Association was created with this mission statement:

“Art and Architecture intertwine, stimulating research and debate, revolving around the conviction that old stone construction can offer adequate if not superior models in our search today for sustainable human dwelling solutions. The continuing insensitivity to this fact is resulting in indiscriminate demolition and renovation, cancelling forever the inestimable heritage of rural stone architecture in Europe. The intention and goal of the Canova Association is to reverse this tendency, carrying out activities aimed at sensitising both the public and private sector.”

This year the 21st edition of the Canova International Architect Encounter continues Canova’s mission to contribute to reversing the loss of our built heritage. Much has been accomplished. Countless revitalisation projects have been initiated throughout the seven Ossola valleys.

The recent transformation from a non-profit association to Foundation has been an important evolution for Canova. While still maintaining our focus on the core mission of the Canova Foundation in its rural context, the 2026 Encounter is extending an invitation to a wider public to consider Adaptive Reuse in our urban environment.

Day One of the 2026 Encounter will demonstrate the work accomplished with the Adaptive Reuse Project of Ghesc in the municipality of Montecrestese.

Just as there has been great strides forward in reevaluating our rural stone heritage, there has also been positive development of the urban fabric in Domodossola. Day Two will address how urban built heritage can be adapted to fit modern life. The European Union faces a massive paradox: over 47 million homes and commercial properties sit empty or derelict, while millions of citizens face urgent housing shortages. Just 6-7% of EU housing stock is social housing, while 20% of homes remain unoccupied, and short-term rentals have surged 93% between 2018 and 2024.

A panel of world-renowned specialists will discuss the extraordinary potential of the Rosmini Complex, beginning to formulate a feasibility plan for its future and discussing how lessons from the Rosmini Complex can be adapted across the EU.

The 2026 Encounter will occur on September 25-26 in Domodossola, Italy. Day One will consist of hands-on demonstrations and thought sessions for a select, invite-only group of senior-career professionals. Day Two is open to the public and will include a range of speakers and lectures focused on adaptive reuse of our built heritage.
