Overview

Online book club: Archaeologists become wartime spies in Nazi-occupied Greece, fighting to save both lives and ancient treasures.

During World War II, a group of archaeologists and classicists connected to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens became unlikely intelligence operatives, resistance collaborators, and protectors of Greece’s cultural heritage. Stephen Talty tells the story of scholars who used their deep knowledge of Greek geography, language, and local networks to aid Allied operations against the Nazis while also attempting to preserve priceless antiquities from destruction and looting. Blending wartime espionage with intellectual history, the book reveals how academics became spies, saboteurs, and defenders of civilization in one of the twentieth century’s most dramatic and morally complex theaters of war.
