Intro to Wood Working: Wood Basics and Four Squaring

Learn the fundamentals of woodworking and build the confidence to run the shop's major machines on your own at MASS Collective!

🪵 Intro to Wood Basics & Four Squaring

In this class you will learn:

• How hardwood is sold, measured, and graded — board feet, thickness in quarters, and what grades like FAS, Select, and #1 Common mean for your project and budget
• How to identify common wood species and what each is best suited for
• The four-squaring process — the exact sequence used to turn rough lumber into clean, usable stock
• Hands-on practice on the miter saw, jointer, planer, table saw, crosscut sled, and random orbit sander

By the end of class, you will have milled your own rough board into a properly squared piece of stock, ready for any project!

IMPORTANT — Waivers must be signed before start of class! Please sign the waiver here.

🦺 Safety & Dress Code (Required)

For your safety, proper attire is mandatory:

• Closed-toed shoes required — no open-toe or mesh shoes
• No loose sleeves, drawstrings, lanyards, or jewelry — anything that could get caught in rotating machinery
• Long hair tied back
• No gloves — they can get pulled into blades; we'll show you push blocks instead

Dust masks and safety glasses will be provided.

If you are not dressed appropriately, you will not be able to participate in the class and the ticket will not be transferrable nor refundable.
