Art & History Museums of Maitland

Mayan Revival & J. André Smith: In the 1920s and 1930s, American architects drew on the ancient Mesoamerican art and culture to create a new style, one they hoped would feel distinctly their own. Mayan Revival architecture appeared on theaters, skyscrapers, and homes across the country, but few places capture its spirit quite like the Maitland Art Center.
On Wednesday, September 30, Katie Benson, Collections Curator at the Art & History Museums of Maitland, traces the style from its roots in 19th-century exploration through the work of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Robert Stacy-Judd. She then turns to J. André Smith's campus in Maitland to explore how and why it stands as a remarkable example of the style. Along the way, she'll look at Smith's inward-facing courtyards, monumental gateways, stepped forms, and the roughly 3,500 reliefs he designed, all shaped to suit his own artistic vision and the Florida landscape.
This evening event is presented during our monthly Last Wednesday hours, when we open our gallery free of charge with a cash bar from 5:30-8pm. Learn more here.Admission, to this event is FREE!
