Do I need to bring anything?

Just yourself! We provide everything you’ll need, including Mahjong tiles, racks, mats, and NMJL cards for use during class.

What is the NMJL Card?

What kind of Mahjong are you teaching?

We teach American Mahjong using official NMJL rules. There are many variations of Mahjong worldwide, but this course focuses on the American style.

Why is the first lesson mandatory?

Each session builds on the last. The first class covers essential foundations that are necessary to understand the rest of the course.

What if I miss a class?

Due to the structured nature of the series, we’re unable to offer make-up classes. We recommend attending all sessions for the best learning experience.

How many seats are in the class?

Classes are kept small and intimate, typically between 4 -8 players, to ensure personalized instruction. You may be asked to pair up and alternate week to week to give everyone a chance to play solo.

Will I actually be playing Mahjong in the first lesson?

Yes—but we start with strong fundamentals first. Once you understand the basics, you’ll begin guided gameplay.

Will I be ready to play on my own after this?

You’ll have a strong foundation and understanding of the game. Most players benefit from additional practice (like guided open play or playing with friends) to build confidence.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes! We offer private group lessons for 4–8 players if you’d prefer to learn with your own group.

Lessons take place at Java Love in Upper Montclair. The address will be shared after registration.

We will not be serving any food or beverages but please feel free to bring your own!

What is the cancellation policy?

All bookings are subject to a 7-day cancellation policy. Cancellations made within 7 days of the event are non-refundable and non-transferable.
