Hometown Heroes: Closing Event — Community Voices

Join us for our Closing Event: Community Voices, the final gathering in the Hometown Heroes series celebrating Vol. 2 of the Shipyard Stories coloring book by William Rhodes and Stacey Carter — now expanded into a full afternoon.

New: The Stories Behind CRANE

Artist William Rhodes and historian Stacey Carter talk about their years of work with Bayview Hunters Point elders — the interviews, drawings and family stories that became two Shipyard Stories coloring books — and how that same work became the foundation of CRANE, the October illumination and live performance on the historic Hunters Point gantry crane. The elders' stories are where CRANE comes from; this is the chance to hear how, from the two people who made it happen.

Moderated by Neal Hatten, himself one of the storytellers in Hometown Heroes. His father came from Texas during the Great Migration and worked at the shipyard as a boilermaker and welder; today Neal works to support older adults and to preserve Hunters Point history.

Community Voices

The afternoon opens with the voices themselves: seniors from the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center read the original pieces they wrote about the Giant Crane after Stacey's history talk. Hear firsthand how the shipyard's engineering legacy still resonates in the community it shaped.

It is also the last day of the Hometown Heroes exhibition — doors open at 1 PM for a last look, community coloring of the giant book pages, and signed books. Refreshments will be served.

Hometown Heroes is about the intertwined histories of the Hunters Point Shipyard and the surrounding Hunters Point community, told through the eyes of living community members, whose African American ancestors migrated here to work at the shipyard. More about the book and exhibition.
