Where exactly is The (mostly) Secret Garden at 245 Lytton Avenue?

The (mostly) Secret Garden is in the POPOS behind 245 Lytton Ave. in downtown Palo Alto. Enter through either gate on Emerson or Ramona Streets, between Lytton and Everett Avenues (closer to Lytton). The gates will be unlocked during REST-A-THON, though they may appear locked.

What is a POPOS?

A POPOS (Privately Owned Public Open Space) is a publicly accessible open space created as a public benefit in exchange for expanded development rights. Unlike many cities, Palo Alto's POPOS currently have no public signage identifying them as public spaces. Learn more at paloaltopopos.org.

What will we do at the REST-A-THON?

Accepted Answer

Very simple: REST. Lie down, sit on a bench, be still, be quiet, meditate—or simply do nothing. Enjoy a respite for healing, peace, and the simple pleasure of a lovely garden open to the public in the middle of the workday. It's free and hosted by an artist. You can bring your own blanket or chair.

This is part of a participatory public art project?

Yes. The REST-A-THON is part of Palo Alto-based artist Lisa Van Dusen's ongoing public art project called Public Benefit: Pop-Ups in the POPOS. This is participatory! Find other pop-ups on Eventbrite by searching for Lisa Van Dusen as the host, or by visiting paloaltopopos.org or lisavandusen.com.

Tell me more about the guest artist Agnieszka Wszolkowska.

Agnieszka Wszolkowska is a New Jersey–based interdisciplinary artist and educator. Born in Warsaw, Poland, she immigrated to the United States in 1992. Her artistic practice explores themes of health and wellness through social practice, sculpture, drawing, painting, textiles, and installation.

Can I come late and leave early?

Absolutely. Please be mindful of other REST-A-THON participants by being quiet as you enter and depart.

No. It's helpful if you can, but the important thing is to come.

Can I bring others?

Yes, please do! This is designed to be a collective activation as we are "inactive" together.

How accessible is the REST-A-THON?

Accepted Answer

The garden is wheelchair accessible, and there are a limited number of benches available. In addition, we will provide a limited number of REST-A-THON blankets for use on the lawn. Please feel free to bring your own chairs, cushions or blankets for your comfort.
