Intro to Mushrooming Class & Foray

Rachel Goclawski, Forager and Certified Educator, state-certified in Mushrooming, is a Programming Partner with the Museum of Natural History, New England Botanic Garden, Sudbury Valley Trustees, etc. Rachel comes from a long line of foragers, including her great-grandfather, Dr. Arthur W. Fairbanks, a founder of the Boston Mycological Club in the 1800's. Rachel is a Contributing Writer for “Now, Forager” in The Cook’s Cook Magazine, and has been featured in The Boston Globe, Bay State Parents Magazine, Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Millbury-Sutton Chronicle, Television Documentaries, and other media/print.

Get the same interactive mushrooming class I give at the Museum of Natural History, including a mushrooming foray in the woods!  Ages 12+

10 Shaw Ln

Take a mushrooming walk in the woods of Shaw Farm preserve in Sutton, MA, then for the classroom, meet at a comfortable local indoor establishment to recieve the same interactive mushrooming class I give at the Museum of Natural History! Learn safety guidelines, identification techniques, types of wild mushrooms best to start with, helpful mushrooming resources, and gain valuable hands-on experience. Bring a way to take notes in class, pictures in the field, a basket or a bag (cloth or paper, not plastic), good walking shoes or boots as the terrain may be uneven or muddy. We will go off trail so be prepared for mud, rocks, steep areas. Insect spray and sunscreen are recommended.DIRECTIONS: do not put Shaw Farm in your GPS- it may take you to Central Tpke trailhead and that is the wrong trailhead. Instead, please put, "10 Shaw Lane, Sutton, MA" in your GPS, the farm is at the end of Shaw Ln. in Sutton. When you get to the end of the road, please park behind the little stable, that grassy field has plenty of room for cars, thanks! NO RESTROOMS so I recommend stopping somewhere before you leave the highway if you're coming from afar (Sutton is a small farming town with no gas station bathrooms or big stores nearby) We will hike from 10:30AM to 12:30PM and then proceed to The Spicy Water Distillery, 108 Elm St., Millbury, MA for the classroom portion of this event. Mushroom Foray/Hike

Time alloted for you to travel to The Spicy Water Distillery, 108 Elm St., Millbury, MA and to get lunch. Lunch is not included but you may purchase and/or bring your own food to the distillery to eat it after 1:00 PM. Lots of local restaurants to choose from, including The Coop BBQ next door to the Distillery.

Travel/Lunch Break

Learn the basics to help you get started on your mushrooming journey. Hands-on and slides with interactive talk. We will cook mushrooms if we find enough edible species to try!
