Recognizing Dissociative Processes In PTSD, C-PTSD, Dissociative Disorders

Online event
Overview

This training provides an overview of the dissociative processes and their role in PTSD, Complex PTSD, and the Dissociative Disorders.

Patients experiencing dissociative processes typically present as either shut down or flooded from storms of affectively charged experience. In such an environment clinicians need to be solidly grounded in the fundamentals of the emergency procedures a mind uses to hide from itself without knowing what or how it’s doing “magic tricks.”

Using typical clinical examples and exploring the subjective experience of the particulars of a somewhat incoherent mind trying to right itself after tipping over, participants in this program will gain specific knowledge that can be imported into the consultation room to help the clinician stay more grounded in the face of the typical chaos experienced when post-traumatic and dissociative disorder clients bravely finally make their way to treatment. This program is suitable for both new and experienced clinicians.

3 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

-describe the normal tension between everyday association and dissociation and how the balance between them contributes to mental coherence.

-discuss why discerning depersonalization is critically important in assessing dissociation.

-describe how dissociative process influence memory and know the questions that are important in distinguishing dissociative disturbances of memory from normal forgetting.

-describe how the notion of dissociative processes as adaptation and self-protection has advantages over thinking of dissociation as a defense.

-discuss the subjective experience of a dissociative not-me state of being and its psychodynamic significance.
