Course overview

The management of patients undergoing total knee and hip arthroplasty requires an in-depth understanding of end-stage osteoarthritis, surgical techniques, post-operative recovery, and rehabilitation across the continuum of care. With the rising prevalence of osteoarthritis, total joint arthroplasty has become one of the most performed and effective procedures for reducing pain and restoring function. Successful outcomes rely on the integration of comprehensive pre-operative planning, clinical decision-making, and progressive rehabilitation strategies tailored to individual patient needs.

This course will examine current advances in joint arthroplasty, including surgical considerations, post-operative precautions, and evidence-based rehabilitation approaches to optimize functional outcomes and return to activity. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing typical versus atypical recovery patterns, identifying post-operative complications and red flags, and applying interdisciplinary strategies to manage these challenges effectively. Through case-based discussions, practical application of treatment principles, and collaborative learning, participants will integrate clinical reasoning, problem-solving, and rehabilitation techniques into practice.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss collaborative preoperative and perioperative decision-making processes that contribute to successful post-operative outcomes following total joint arthroplasty.

• Identify common post-operative complications, red flags, and atypical recovery patterns across the rehabilitation continuum.

• Develop problem-solving strategies to manage setbacks and guide patients through atypical or delayed recoveries.

• One-Day Live Stream Option for CEUs only
• HSS Rehabilitation Joint Arthroplasty Certification (includes pre-course learning, one-day live stream, and in-person hands-on lab at HSS)

Requirements for the HSS Rehabilitation Joint Arthroplasty Certification

The following course components outline the requirements for certification:

1. Pre-requisites and pre-course knowledge assessment

• On November 6, 2026, participants will be provided with access to HSS Rehabilitation Post-Operative Clinical Guidelines for total hip and total knee arthroplasty and required on-demand lectures and readings to review before the Livestreamed Course.
• By December 3, 2026, participants must complete a 25 question pre-course knowledge assessment, to access the Live streaming Course. A passing score of 80% is required, with multiple attempts allowed.
  
  2. 2- Day Course: December 4 - 5, 2026: Full participation in this Hybrid Course is required

• December 4: Live streaming is required.
• December 5: On-site Participation is required.
  
  3. Home study: Course material available for self-study through January 11, 2027

• Participants will have access to on-demand foundational material through January 11, 2027.
• Recordings of the Live streamed Course will be available to participants from December 7, 2026–January 11, 2027.
  
  4. Post-course requirements to be completed between January 11, 2027 and February 15, 2027

To qualify for the HSS Rehabilitation Joint Arthroplasty Certification, the following must be completed no later than February 15, 2027:

• A 40-question clinical reasoning case-based exam with an 80% passing score. Only TWO attempts will be permitted for Certification
• Program Evaluation

Those who do not pass the post-course knowledge assessment within TWO attempts will only be eligible to receive continuing education credits. They will not be granted Certification.

Certification is valid from February 2027 – February 2032.

One-Day Live Streaming CEU-Only Course

Accreditation Details for Physical Therapy Professionals:

Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education.This course is approved for a maximum of 6.5 contact hours for the 1 day live stream. For the HSS Rehabilitation Total Knee and Hip Arthroplasty Certification is approved for a maximum of 16 contact hours.

This activity is provided by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Accredited Provider 2812063TX and meets continuing competence requirements for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensure renewal in Texas.
