Stories With No Words: Create Powerful Photographic Portraits
From selfie-lovers to advanced photographers, this workshop series teaches you to use whatever camera you have to create incredible pics!
Stories with No Words is a three-session photo workshop series hosted at Goldmark Cultural Center by Wildart Creative and is supported in part by the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture.
Whether you love taking selfies, snapping candid shots with an old-school point & shoot digicam, or you know your way around with a DSLR, these sessions will help you use your camera to create dynamic, powerful stories through portraiture.
Hosted by visual artist hype shooter & photographer Peyton Mixon, this workshop series includes:
- Interactive classroom-style instruction
- Hands-on demos featuring live models
- One-on-one instruction & feedback
- Access to professional photo & lighting gear
- Guided outdoor photo walk
- Peer-to-peer photo critique
- Photographic art print of one of your portraits
- Get your work featured in a exhibition at Ruth Andres Gallery
The Art of Portraiture (July 11)
Using your camera to tell a story
Session 1 is practical & hands on classroom-style instruction led by veteran portrait photographers hype shooter & Peyton Mixon. They will guide you through foundational narrative & photography theory.
Each concept will first be demonstrated in action by the photographers and followed by guided hands-on time for participants to try that concept out themselves.
Creating Your Story (July 15)
Exploring Dallas with a photo walk
Session 2 will be a “photo walk”. We will meet at Anderson Bonner Park in North Dallas and have practical demonstrations of setting up a shoot outside.
You'll observe the photographers putting the concepts taught in Session 1 into practice with a live model and then you'll engage in a structured time of composing portrait shots with your fellow participants as models (switching off between being the subject and being the photographer.)
Refining Your Story (July 18)
Working in a digital darkroom
For our final session you'll grab your laptop, tablet, or smartphone and return to Goldmark Cultural Center to craft your own digital darkroom.
The photographers will introduce you to both free and commercially available software that will allow you to examine, edit, and refine your portraits. You'll be taught both the technical skills of how to adjust framing and exposure, as well as how to make choices based on your creative vision.
Gallery Showcase (August 1)
Share your work with the community
We are honored and thrilled to partner with Goldmark Cultural Center to host an exhibition at Ruth Andres Gallery that will feature the work you and your fellow participants create in this workshop series! The group exhibition will be on display for two weeks, and will be kicked off with an opening reception open to the public in early August.
