Black Panther & Polar Bear | Toronto Premiere of a Ukrainian Drama

He chose the painting. She chose their child. Both believed they were right.

Vita Art, in collaboration with Zahrava Theatre, presents the Toronto premiere of Black Panther & Polar Bear, a landmark Ukrainian psychological drama by Volodymyr Vynnychenko.

Written in 1911 and presented in English for Toronto audiences, the play introduces one of Ukraine’s most important modernist writers through a story that feels unsettlingly contemporary.

Set among a circle of artists in Paris, the play centres on Korniy Kanevych—known as the Polar Bear—and his wife Rita, the Black Panther.

Their young son, Lesyk, is seriously ill. The family needs money to leave Paris and move him to a healthier climate. Korniy’s unfinished painting could provide that money, but he refuses to sell the work before it is complete.

For Korniy, the painting is not simply an object. It contains his identity, his hopes, and the life he believes he was meant to create.

For Rita, there is only one truth: their child needs to be saved.

As the family is pushed further into crisis, love becomes entangled with pride, fear, jealousy, control, and self-justification. Each character understands that their choices may cause harm—and continues making them anyway.

What follows is a raw and intimate tragedy about the choices people make when personal desire conflicts with responsibility.

Can love survive when two people believe their own needs are morally necessary?
Can art justify the suffering used to create it?
And why do people choose what they want, even when they know it is wrong?

A Ukrainian classic, presented for today

Volodymyr Vynnychenko was a Ukrainian writer, playwright, artist, and political figure whose plays were widely performed in Europe during the early twentieth century.

Although Black Panther & Polar Bear was written more than a century ago, its examination of family, creative identity, responsibility, and selfishness remains deeply recognizable.

This Toronto premiere presents the work not as a historical artifact or heritage presentation, but as a living psychological drama capable of speaking directly to contemporary Canadian audiences.

No knowledge of Ukrainian history or literature is required.

The performance will be presented in English.

About the director

Sandrina Nei is an award-winning Ukrainian actor, singer, dancer, and director who relocated to Toronto in 2022.

Her theatre credits include Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Emilia in Othello, Constance in The Madwoman of Chaillot, Suzanne/Cello in L’Orchestre, and Fanny Kaplan in Director Peron Directs at Alumnae Theatre in Toronto.

Her directing credits include Three Tall Women, The Sound of Music, and Cry-Baby.

For this production, Sandrina approaches Black Panther & Polar Bear as an intimate, actor-driven psychological tragedy. The staging places emotional truth and the changing relationships between the characters at the centre of the audience experience.

Sandrina also appears in the leading role of Rita—the Black Panther—a wife and mother fighting to protect her family while refusing to disappear beneath her husband’s artistic vision.
