The tour will start at the Bureau of Land Management's Axolotl Cabin. Coordinates for the cabin are 45.2405556, -111.8713889. More information about access to the cabin area can be found at https://www.blm.gov/visit/axolotl-cabin. Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling!

Is there additional parking?

Yes! Parking is limited, however additional parking can be found at the Axolotl Lakes Day Use parking area.

How long is the hike?

The hike is approximately 2.2 miles.

What are the trail conditions?

Accepted Answer

This hike travels across uneven high-country terrain, including rolling hills, wet meadows, and informal footpaths between lakes. Be prepared for full sun, wind, and rapidly changing mountain weather, as the route offers little natural shelter.

Do I have to complete the full hike?

Participants are not required, but are encouraged, to complete the full hike.

What should participants bring?

Attendees should bring water, snacks, sun protection, sturdy footwear, and layers to accommodate changing weather conditions.

No flushing toilets are available. Vault toilets are accessible at the cabin and day-use area.

Will refreshments be provided?

Yes! Coffee will be provided at the start of the day, and water will be offered for attendees. Lunch will also be provided for attendees after the hike.

Are dogs permitted?

Dogs, other than service animals, are not encouraged on the field tour. Please leave pets at home.
