Santa Monica Conservancy: Downtown Walking Tour
Explore Downtown Santa Monica’s architecture, history, and culture on a docent-led walk through iconic local landmarks.
Over the course of approximately six blocks, this two-hour tour brings the city’s layered past to life through the buildings, stories, and landmarks that continue to shape downtown today. From Art Deco and Victorian to Romanesque Revival, guests will explore the architectural styles that fill Santa Monica’s streets while learning about the people and places behind them.
Along the way, you’ll hear stories about the start of the modern movie industry, visit a lavish Art Deco hotel known for attracting Hollywood celebrities, and see where Jim Morrison played his first show. Tour sites may include the Bay Cities Guaranty Building, El Miro Theater, Gussie Moran House, Keller Block, Rapp Saloon, Shangri-La Hotel, The Georgian Hotel, and more.
Whether you are a local, a visitor, a history lover, or simply curious about the city around you, this tour offers a fresh way to experience Downtown Santa Monica through the lens of preservation, architecture, and storytelling.
