Come join the conversation, come be part of the art—just Come As You Are. Over the past two years, Baltimore-based artist Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp has been dreaming with the team at BlackRock Center for the Arts about what community-driven public art could look like. Donahue-Shipp brings extensive experience working in popular vernacular forms to his participatory, community-focused public art practice—having spent over twenty-six years working as a freelance airbrush artist customizing clothing, automobiles, and murals. Of his current interdisciplinary studio practice he says, “[my practice] combines painting, assemblage, vacuum forming, collage, and mural-making to investigate how everyday objects carry histories of labor, place, memory, and belonging. My experience as an airbrush artist led me to reconsider the T-shirt not only as a wearable image, but as a sculptural and emotional artifact. In my paintings, shirts are transformed into stitched assemblages that function simultaneously as garments, readymades, and painted surfaces. Similarly, my Basketball Bloom series examines basketball as a social object shaped by touch, play, and community. I collect basketballs worn and marked by use, then deconstruct and reconstruct them into floral assemblages bound together with shoestrings, transforming them into records of resilience, care, and collective experience.
