Tending Rock Point - Buckthorn Bonanza
In the final session of Tending Rock Point for 2026, we will make one last push of cutting Buckthorn, a rapidly spreading, introduced tree.
Tending Rock Point is a series of workshops where we practice collaborative stewardship and reciprocity with the land at Rock Point. By integrating agricultural activities and ecological restoration throughout the year, we take a holistic view of land stewardship and find our place as humans in the ecology of Rock Point. In each session, we will spend part of our time learning about a topic and part of the time working on a project together.
One of our last acts of land tending each fall at Rock Point is cutting as much Buckthorn as we can handle. This tree is an introduced species in our forests that rapidly spreads through the understory, competing with many native trees and other plants. We have been successfully managing this with hand saws and pruning shears, and this is a chance for one final push before the trees drop their leaves and send those nutrients back into the roots for winter. Join us in one of the most beautiful times to be out in the forest at Rock Point!
Bring water, snacks, and clothing that can get dirty!
We will meet in the Rock Point Center parking lot at 20 Rock Point Road. Continue past the sign that says "no unauthorized vehicles," over the bridge, to the right, and all the way back to the gravel parking lot.
