The Carver Kickback: Artist Talk with Hakeem Adewumi
The Free Your Mind Symposium returns to the Carver on June 18!
Join artist Hakeem Adewumi and Rachel Winston, Black Diaspora Archivist at the University of Texas at Austin, for an intimate conversation about Seeing Further — a mixed-media exhibition exploring Juneteenth as a living Black Southern tradition rooted in Texas mythology, African spirituality, and the supernatural. Hakeem shares the personal history, family objects, and landscape that shaped the work, and what it means to make art that listens to ancestors.
Together, Hakeem and Rachel will sit with a question at the heart of the show: what happens to a regional ethos of liberation when the world claims it as its own? Come prepared for an honest, grounded conversation about memory, place, and what it means for all of us to see further into Juneteenth.
