A rare immersive evening of Indian classical music. Rooted in one of the oldest surviving vocal traditions of South Asia.
South Asia Institute is honored to present an evening with internationally acclaimed Dhrupad vocalist Uday Bhawalkar, one of the foremost contemporary masters of the Dhrupad tradition and a leading figure in its global resurgence.
A disciple of the legendary Ustaad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustaad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, Bhawalkar’s performances are celebrated for their depth, meditative intensity, and profound emotional resonance. Rooted in one of the oldest surviving forms of Indian classical music, Dhrupad unfolds through sustained exploration of voice, raga, vibration, and breath, creating an immersive listening experience that transcends language and cultural boundaries.
For over four decades, Uday Bhawalkar has performed internationally across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, appearing at prestigious festivals and institutions while contributing significantly to the preservation and contemporary understanding of Dhrupad. His work continues to inspire audiences through a practice grounded in discipline, contemplation, and sonic immersion.
