This documentary, directed by Ernesto Fundora, explores the life and work of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, one of Cuba's most unconventional artists, who defied the Cuban regime through performance art.
His activism eventually led to the rise of the political resistance movement Movimiento San Isidro, named after the street where he lived. His relentless opposition to the Cuban government inspired the anthem "Patria y Vida" which galvanized a generation of young Cubans and helped spark the historic anti-government protests of July 11, 2021.
Now imprisoned for his political activism, Luisma, as he is known to his supporters, was named by Time magazine as one of the 50 most influential people of our era.
This event is presented in conjunction with the Institute for Freedom in the Americas at Miami Dade College.
