Felt Flower Making

Serving as both an interactive, ongoing art-installation as well as an academic research library, BLUE is an ever-growing home to 6,000 books, journals, exhibition catalogs and objects that examine and celebrate the global history, traditions, makers, craft and beauty of textiles.Open to the public by appointment, BLUE is an immersive reading and learning space. It offers visitors an aesthetic and tactile experience in its carefully chosen hues and textures. Different from traditional libraries, the intense presence of color evokes the complex relationship between humans and cloth. The saturation reminds us not just of the cultural and economic significance of color, but also that textiles permeate all industries and aspects of human life.Through its workshops and event progamming, BLUE seeks to deepen the appreciation of textiles and fiber through diverse experiences with experts, artists and thinkers in the broad fields relting to cloth.

BLUE: Tatter Textile Library

Explore a world of color, texture, and creativity in this flower-making workshop inspired by Alison Kaplan’s own dye garden. Alison’s commitment to sustainability and an enchantment with the colors coaxed from plants has brought the Kata Golda color palette to life. The stacks of plant-dyed wool felt on the shelves of her studio inspired these dimensional spring wool felt flowers. Under Alison’s guidance, you will explore creative techniques – from template making and hand-stitching to intentionally embracing asymmetry and negative space. Participants will create unique, one-of-a-kind blossoms that can be worn as brooches, hair clips, or displayed as decorations. There will be an abundant collection of Alison’s sample flowers to explore for inspiration.In class, you will create multiple felt flowers, with materials provided in abundance so there is no set limit to how many you can make. Each participant will also receive a take-home wool felt flower kit, which includes templates, instructions, and photo inspiration to continue making flowers at home. Alison will demonstrate how to make the most of scraps, showing that nothing goes to waste, and providing techniques and ideas that you can carry forward into your own creative practice.
