The Battle of Brooklyn: Local History in Archives and Outdoor Classrooms
Explore the Battle of Brooklyn through archives, local history, and Green-Wood’s landscape in this full-day teacher PD program.
Join the Center for Brooklyn History (CBH) and The Green-Wood Cemetery to take a deeper dive into the largest battle of the American Revolution—the Battle of Brooklyn. At CBH, teachers will tour the exhibition The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered with Chief Historian Dominque Jean-Louis and engage with primary sources in the Othmer Library with CBH’s Education team. Participants will explore strategies for engaging with archival resources and consider how to deepen their students’ connection to local history through CBH’s unique collections.
At Green-Wood, teachers will tour the newly opened Green-House visitor center and consider how the Cemetery can be a classroom. Then, teachers will explore revolutionary history aboard our trolley across Green-Wood’s 478 acres. Led by Director of Education, Rachel Walman, teachers will learn how to bring historical inquiry outdoors using grave monuments as sources, all while traversing the actual battlefield where the Battle of Brooklyn took place on August 27, 1776.
This professional development will begin at the Center for Brooklyn History at 128 Pierrepont Street. After lunch, participants will be provided with free transportation via trolley to Green-Wood’s Green-House at 750 Fifth Avenue for the afternoon session. Please see below for a detailed schedule.
