Volunteer Event at Maria Hernandez Park

This June, NCA is hosting a series of events centered around the English Kills tributary of Newtown Creek aimed to engage the East Williamsburg and Bushwick communities with this inaccessible waterway and ways that the upland communities can help improve conditions in both the Creek and on local streets.

Join us Saturday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Maria Hernandez Park — meet in the park at the South Corner, Suydam St and Knickerbocker Ave.

This event will include:

• Introduction to the importance of green infrastructure from Community Coordinators from DEP (why it is good for water quality in Newtown Creek)
• Hands-on maintenance of curbside rain gardens around Maria Hernandez Park with NYC DEP, Council Member Jennifer Guiterrez, Nicole from Clean-up Bushwick Initiative, and members of the Brooklyn Solid Waste Advisory Board (BK SWAB)
• Cleanup of sidewalk and street trash around Maria Hernandez Park

This event is run in partnership with Cleanup Bushwick Initiative, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, Brooklyn Solid Waste Advisory Board , and the office of Councilmember Jennifer Gutiérrez.

​​We will provide gloves, tools, safety vests, and guidance on how to safely complete our tasks for the day. Before the event, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here).

En colaboración con el Departamento de Protección Ambiental (DEP) de la ciudad de Nueva York, aprenderemos sobre el valor de la infraestructura verde y ayudaremos a mantener y mejorar los jardines de lluvia que rodean este icónico y vibrante parque. La infraestructura verde es una herramienta vital para prevenir el desbordamiento de las aguas residuales y combatir los problemas ambientales locales como las inundaciones, la calidad del aire y el calor extremo - pero necesitan cuidado y atención. ¡Ven a echar una mano!
