About the Band - The Ravers

The Ravers have been rocking for nearly 30 years and captured top honors as favorite band in the 2012 Mercury Love Awards. Ernest has been playing drums nearly since the band started in 1988. He laughs now because when friends Eric “Boofish” Barclay de Tolly and Carey Bowman — the first and only lead singer — started the Ravers, Ernest wondered who would come out to hear a bunch of white kids play reggae.

“I thought it was a dumb idea,” Ernest recalled. “I couldn’t believe it. Then I saw them and it was great. And I sat in a few times and eventually I wormed my way into the drummer’s seat. I’ve been there ever since.”

Most band members are now over 40. And the Ravers have a large alumni association, with members starting careers and families. The current lineup features Bowman and Ernest, as well as guitarist Adam Aleicho, keyboardist Steve Cerilli, bassist Ray Gennari and a revolving of horn players including Dan Moretti, Curt Ramm, Gerard Ramm, Mark Earley and Doug Woolverton.

The band also plays a good number of sailing parties and it’s gotten them something of an international fan base. Sailors in Newport for the summer will take Ravers CDs home to ports in, say, Australia.

“I’ve had people from all over the world tell me they know our music,” Ernest said. “That blows me away.”
