Spokane Riverkeeper: How Ground Connection to The River Can Lead to Advocacy and Policy Change

Join [us] for an evening focused on the intersection of water, policy, and the built environment. We're happy to welcome Jule Schultz, Waterkeeper with the Spokane Riverkeeper. This AIA HSW-accredited session explores how hands-on connection to the river can drive meaningful advocacy, influence policy, and shape more resilient communities.Stretching from Lake Coeur d’Alene to Lake Roosevelt, the Spokane River watershed reflects a complex story of past impacts, ongoing restoration, and future responsibility. This forum will explore how community science, policy, and hands-on action come together to protect and restore this vital system.

What to Expect:

  • Insight into how impaired water systems are identified and regulated (including 303(d) listings and watershed policy)
  • A closer look at the relationship between river flow, aquifer health including the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer—and long-term resilience
  • Exploration of non-point source pollution and its impact on public health and native species like redband trout
  • Examples of how community-led data collection and river cleanup efforts influence funding, regulation, and restoration outcomes
  • Opportunities for architects, designers, and developers to integrate water stewardship into their work

This forum will also dive into Spokane Riverkeeper’s core initiatives from volunteer-driven river cleanup efforts to legal advocacy that has secured millions in restoration funding. Continuing the mission to encouraging environmental stewardship and civic engagement to create measurable change.Networking & Collaboration:Whether you’re a design professional, community member, or simply someone who values the health of our region, this forum offers a deeper understanding of how we can all play a role in shaping a more sustainable future.Come connect, learn, and be part of the conversation! Enjoy light bites & refreshments.
