Join Artist Danielle Mason for a Live Recording & Oral History Presentation with Gullah Farmer, Bernard Singleton
7-8 pm: Listening Session - Setup inside of 2505 Holman
The Listening Session serves as a deep dive into the Haint Blue cosmology. Bernard Singleton will offer a formal address on the links between indigo cultivation and spiritual technology/ancestor communication.
- The Bottle Tree & Hoodoo: An exploration of the indigo-hued bottles used to trap restless spirits (haints), connecting the blue aesthetic to protection and the spirit world.
- The Juke Joint as Sacred Space: The history of the juke & his personal memories of his grandmother who owned one. Unpacking the symbolism of the juke as a site of resistance and subversion. Maroon choreography.
- Live Recording: The session will be archived through video & audio transcript to be featured in the Friend of My Mind exhibition to take place later in the year.
8-11 pm - Indoor/Outdoor Activations - Inside 2505 Holman & back porches immediately behind 2505.
- Vinyl Set by DJ Elevated - sonic survey of blues, funk, screw, and other Southern ballads.
- Porches (immediately behind 2505) used to welcome participants to participate in spoken word/covers of classics.
- Ring Shout activation feat. The JuJu Shop Collective
