Shaam-e-Queer: Celebrating South Asian Queer Joy

South Asia Institute (SAI)Chicago, IL
Overview

South Asia Institute with Trikone Chicago and Desi Rainbow presents Shaam-e-Queer, celebrating South Asian queer joy, creativity community.

The South Asia Institute joins Trikone Chicago and Desi Rainbow to present Shaam- e-Queer, a vibrant evening dedicated to celebrating South Asian queer joy, creativity, resilience, and community. Together, we seek to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment where art, history, and community intersect in meaningful ways. This special gathering will bring together artists, performers, and community members through an engaging multidisciplinary program featuring:

  • “Centering Joy: Queer Spaces in 2026.”
Starting the evening, a panel discussion featuring organizers and activists from Desi Rainbow and Trikone Chicago, exploring how queer South Asian communities are cultivating spaces for joy, resilience, care, and belonging in today’s political and cultural landscape
  • A dynamic drag performance by Chicago-based South Asian drag artists, celebrating self-expression, artistry, and queer pride, follows the panel discussion.
  • An exhibition of archival materials will allow attendees to engage with the histories, narratives, and cultural memory within Chicago’s South Asian queer community, which continue to shape the city’s South Asian LGBTQ+ landscape
  • Food and refreshments.

At a time when queer communities continue to create spaces of affirmation and solidarity, this event centers joy as an act of presence, resistance, and celebration. Through dialogue, performance, and archival exploration, the evening invites attendees to reflect on the richness and diversity of South Asian queer experiences across generations.

We invite you to join us in celebrating South Asian queer joy in all its forms.
