Attend this 2-day crash course that covers all the fundamentals about fabric, from fibers to weaves, and of course textile recycling!

Join FABSCRAP’s 2-Day Intensive to…

Improve confidence in textiles and gain current industry knowledge in identifying fiber types and fabric construction methods to make informed, environmentally responsible selections, while evaluating recyclability, durability, and performance to support circular systems.

Agenda & Topics:

Day 1: Monday Nov 9, 1-4p AT NEW YORK SEWING CENTER

  • Weave and Knit Structures: An examination of fabric construction enabling you to know the difference between various structures and how they influence performance, longevity, and functional use.
  • Fiber Fundamentals: Detailed breakdown of natural, synthetic, blended, and regenerative fibers, helping you identify their properties, understand how they’re made, distinguish between them, determine their best uses, and evaluate their environmental impact.
  • Compare and contrast fabric types: Combining the knowledge learned from structure and fiber to learn fabric names and their classifications. Deeper dive into the subtle variances of weave and knit structures and how fibers factor into the final textile. Familiarity with fashion names of fabric, and apply new found knowledge to understand the drape and application of a fabric when different fibers are used for the same weave.

Day 2: Tuesday Nov 10, 1-4p ON ZOOM

  • Recyclability and Circularity Principles: An overview of how textiles move through their lifecycle empowering you to make strategic decisions that improve product longevity, reduce waste, and advance circular practices.
  • Industry Insights Panel: Engaging perspectives from industry professionals on current issues, innovations, and circular practices, supporting you to use the concepts you learned in this intensive and apply them in real-world contexts.

Over two days, participants will explore:

  • Fiber fundamentals: natural, synthetic, blended, and regenerative materials
  • Fabric construction, including weave and knit structures
  • Textile performance and end use
  • Recyclability and circularity of textiles in fashion systems
  • Current industry innovations and sustainability practices

Leave equipped with a newfound clarity and understanding around textiles for performance, longevity, and circularity — skills that are essential for anyone striving to be sustainable in design or daily life.
