Layered Florals: A Gouache and Ink Workshop

In this workshop, we’ll paint bold, expressive dahlias using a layered mixed media approach. Combining opaque gouache paint with gestural linework, you’ll learn how to build depth, movement, and personality into your florals.

Each student will receive a pre-drawn dahlia outline on high-quality mixed media paper, allowing us to focus fully on layering color, developing dimension, and adding expressive petal details. We’ll break down the structure of the flower into approachable brushstrokes, then build richness and energy through intentional and confident mark-making.

This class is welcoming and relaxed while still teaching foundational layering techniques you can continue using in your own creative practice. Students will leave with a finished 8x10 mixed media floral painting and the confidence to apply these techniques to future work.

About the Artist: Emelia Kelley is a floral artist specializing in expressive, layered botanicals. Her work blends soft romantic palettes with bold, gestural linework, creating florals that feel both delicate and dynamic.

Before transitioning into teaching painting workshops, she spent years teaching in other settings, which shaped the way she approaches instruction today — clear, supportive, and confidence-building. Emelia loves helping students break down complex florals into approachable steps while still encouraging personal expression and creative freedom.

Each participant will leave with their finished 8x10 mixed media painting
