Overview

Join us a hands-on workshop to photograph these amazing creatures up close!

Join us for a hands-on workshop to photograph these amazing creatures up close in controlled conditions. You'll capture great photos and learn more about how to find and photograph them in the wild.

We'll work with a variety of butterflies, caterpillars, and maybe even a big moth or two. You'll learn about the habitat, behavior, and life cycle of these beautiful little insects, where and when to look for them, and how to approach them.

In our controlled studio setting, we'll talk about lens choice and perspective, camera settings to to catch more successful photos, and how light and time of day can change the whole picture. You'll leave this workshop prepared with the skills to start capturing great images in the wild!

Key topics for this session

  • Butterfly behavior and life cycle: where to look and what to look for
  • Creative composition ideas
  • Looking for interesting light
  • Creating a natural-looking setting in controlled conditions
  • Lens choice, technique, and perspective

Gear to consider

  • Any interchangeable-lens camera
  • We'll be very close to our subjects, so short telephoto lenses will work well. A standard zoom lens, 18-55mm (crop sensor) or 28-70mm (full frame) is ok. We used an 18-55mm at the 55mm end for most of these sample photos!

Helpful Extras

  • A macro lens, extension tubes, or closeup filters will be great to go in for very close detail shots.
  • Flash with remote trigger capabilities
  • Flash diffuser/mini softbox

Class size is limited, we can not overbook this session.
