🧠 Lecture: "Infinity +1: The Strange World of Things that Never End"
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Ismar Volić
Join us for a mind-bending evening as Professor Ismar Volić guides us through the beautiful and surprising mathematics of infinity. From the infinitely large to the infinitely small, this talk will explore classic paradoxes like Zeno’s puzzle of the arrow that never reaches its target, Hilbert’s legendary hotel that’s always full yet always has room for more guests, and Cantor’s astonishing proof that some infinities are bigger than others.
Along the way, you’ll see how grappling with ideas that never end can illuminate the very finite world we inhabit.
Ismar Volić is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College. His research spans topology and social choice theory, and he has authored numerous articles and books, including the prize-winning Making Democracy Count: How Mathematics Improves Voting, Electoral Maps, and Representation.
