CNC Plasma Cutting Workshop
This hands-on workshop covers the essentials of CNC plasma cutting, from safety, file processing to machine operation.
Learn the essentials of CNC plasma cutting in this hands-on workshop. Participants will be introduced to machine safety, how to set up vector files, and the workflow from digital file to finished cut. Each student will cut a basic design, gaining practical experience in setup, operation, and post-processing.
Part 1 - Introduction and Safety.
- What a CNC plasma cutter is and what it can do.
- Overview of the machine components (torch, gantry, controller, compressor).
- Safety briefing: PPE, welding screens, ventilation precautions, fire safety
- Demonstration of safe machine startup.
Part 2 - Understanding Software and Designs.
- Quick intro to vector design for plasma cutting
- Key design rules: closed shapes, no overlapping lines, accounting for kerf.
- Understand differences between DXF/SVG file formats.
- Importing files into SheetCAM.
- Setup up workflows, cutting a single part to multiple.
- Generating toolpaths and gcode.
Part 3 - Hands On Cutting.
- Basic machine operations.
- Importing gcode and setting voltage and amperage
- Zeroing out machine on workpiece.
- The instructor demonstrates cutting sheet metal.
- Each student runs the machine under supervision.
- Troubleshooting, gcode editing, salvaging failed cuts, and other advanced operations.
Part 4 - Post-Processing & Wrap-Up.
- Demonstration of removing dross
- Parking machine before shut down.
- Demonstration of safe machine shutdown.
- Q and A discussion.
