Where is parking if the lot is full?

Spill over parking is located in the church parking lot across Rte. 169 from the museum. Please plan to arrive close to your tour time, as there are no indoor waiting locations.

Is the museum accessible?

The museum has one accessible parking lot & a ramp leads to the main entrance (image on website). The second floor is closed; the first floor and restroom are accessible. Fifteen (15) exhibit banners have audio access in English and Spanish. The Peace Pole in the Peace Garden includes Braille & ASL.

Is this a historic house museum?

The museum is not decorated as a traditional historic house museum or historic school. Teachers, students, and supporters left few primary sources on how rooms were used during the time the school was in operation, and few artifacts connected to the school have survived.

Contact the museum curator (860) 546-7800 x. 101 or at crandall.museum@ct.gov. Staff will assist you with any needed changes as is possible.

Can I visit the museum or schedule a private tour on a Tuesday or Wednesday?

No. The museum is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thursdays are for private tours.  The museum is not open for tours "by appointment."

Located in the center of the Town of Canterbury, the Prudence Crandall Museum is an International Site of Conscience, a National Historic Landmark, and State Archaeological Preserve. Prudence Crandall is Connecticut's Official State Heroine.

As part of The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor, the Prudence Crandall Museum proudly offers an official National Park Service Passport stamp.

What days are you closed?

The museum is closed the following days: Memorial Day (5/25), Independence Day (7/4), Labor Day (9/7), & Indigenous Peoples' Day (10/13).

Can I bring food and drink into the museum?

Accepted Answer

The museum recommends visitors patronize local food establishments either well before their tour or afterwards, as food and drink are not allowed in the museum. Tightly sealed water bottles are permissible. The Peace Garden and picnic tables are welcoming spaces in nice weather.
