You know how everybody has a rash? You know how you have no idea how much your medical care is going to cost? You know how you inherit all of your genetic matter from your parents and there’s (mostly) nothing you can do about it? You know how scary that is? But also kinda funny? Join Chicago comedian, writer, and actor Beau Maguire as he tries to make sense of these questions and more in a one-night-only preview of his debut essay collection and solo show, Body Politic, directed by Arlene Malinowski.

The evening will feature special guests from the Chicago arts community to be announced.

This project is partially supported by a CityArts Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.

The International Museum of Surgical Science acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Beau Maguire is a writer, comedian, actor, and septoplasty recipient based in Chicago. He writes about the human body, genealogy, and navigating the American medical system. He is at the root of the filthy emoji-based text messages that circulate every holiday.

After a stint at a startup in San Francisco, Beau moved to Chicago to complete the summer intensive at the iO Theater. He is a graduate of the Second City Conservatory. He cofounded the legendary sketch group Rosemary’s Other Baby and the mythic comedy duo A Lot of Things, with which he developed the form “50 Things In 20 Minutes.”

His comedy has been featured in Slackjaw, Sketchfest Chicago, Bentwood Festival, Out of Bounds Festival, DC Sketchfest, and Philly Sketchfest. He has participated in writing residencies and workshops at StoryStudio Chicago and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and he is an inaugural fellow for StoryStudio Chicago and Lookingglass Theater’s Write Where You Are Fellowship. He will participate in the 2026 Sewanee Writers’ Conference. He is currently writing his debut comedic essay collection, Body Politic.
