Black Lit Book Group with Micah
Discusses Ghostroots by 'Pemi Aguda
Led by Greenlight bookseller Micah, with special appearances from fellow Greenlight booksellers, our Black Lit Book Group meets monthly to amplify the works of past and present Black voices of all genres. All reading frequencies are welcome!
For June, the group discusses the National Book Award for Fiction finalist Ghostroots, by 'Pemi Aguda, a beguiling debut collection of twelve imaginative short stories, set in a hauntingly reimagined Lagos where characters vie for freedom from ancestral ties. Powered by a deep empathy and glinting with humor, in this, Aguda dramatizes the tension between our yearning to be individuals and the ways we are haunted by what came before. These and other stories in Ghostroots map emotional and physical worlds that lay bare the forces of family, myth, tradition, gender, and modernity in Nigerian society; and announce a major new literary talent.
