Woodland Cemetery: Take a Hike Summer Series
TAKE A HIKE® Summer Serries offers FREE in-person, guided walking tours of unique historic neighborhoods and places in Cleveland!
Discover the unique charm of Cleveland’s Woodland Cemetery, located on Woodland Avenue in the Central neighborhood. Established in 1853, it became Cleveland's main public cemetery after its founding and remained so for the next half-century. Spanning sixty acres, the cemetery offers a park-like atmosphere that sets it apart from other burial sites. Woodland Cemetery is both a Cleveland Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Notable highlights include the recently restored Woodland Cemetery Gatehouse, originally constructed in the 1870s. It is the largest of the gatehouses built at three City of Cleveland cemeteries.
The cemetery’s diverse markers reflect the varied lives of those buried here, adding to its historical intrigue. It is one of the most diverse burial grounds in Cleveland, serving as the final resting place for over 85,000 souls, including Civil War veterans, Negro League baseball players, women inventors, and many of Cleveland's most influential historical figures.
Character you may meet along the tour: Lucy Bagby, Eliza Bryant or Levi Johnson.
RESERVATIONS are requested but not required, walk-ups the day of tour are welcomed.
PARKING: Woodland Cemetery is located at 6901 Woodland Avenue but please enter from 6901 Quincy Avenue. Upon entering, drive towards the center of the cemetery to meet near the flagpole. There is plenty of parking in the cemetery in the meet up area.
