Turn your own custom wooden pen! Learn lathe basics, shaping, sanding, and assembly—take home a handcrafted pen.

In this hands-on class, you’ll create your own custom wooden pen using a Rockler pen hardware kit and a variety of beautiful wood species. This beginner-friendly workshop will guide you through the full pen turning process—from preparing your blank to shaping, sanding, finishing, and final assembly—resulting in a functional, handcrafted pen you’ll be proud to use or gift.


What You’ll Do:

• Select your pen blank from a variety of domestic and exotic wood species

• Cut your blank to length using a bandsaw

• Drill the blank to accept the brass tube using a drill press

• Mount the blank on a lathe using a pen mandrel

• Turn and shape your pen using Rockler carbide turning tools

• Sand the pen to a smooth finish

• Apply a durable, easy-to-use finish

• Assemble the pen hardware using a pen press

• Use of Rockler safety gear


Important Info:

• Ages 14+ — minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

• Class is beginner-friendly — no prior experience needed

• Attendees will be using power tools—proper safety instruction and equipment will be provided

• Each attendee takes home their completed wooden pen
