Overview

Design, build, and race boats made of recycled materials at the National Museum of the Great Lakes!

Every Saturday in June | 10:30 am – 1:30 pm

Located in the Great Lakes Community Education Center | Included with museum admission, free for members and Museums for All | Registration encouraged

Let your imagination sail with our Capt. Scupper’s Kids Club: Recycled Regatta, presented by Cleveland-Cliffs and supported by the Darrell & Jean Fox Fund. Throughout June, young engineers and their families are invited to design, build, and race mini‑boats made entirely from recycled materials. From empty milk jugs to scrap cardboard, anything rescued from the recycle bin can become a worthy vessel in our indoor regatta course. Save your spot today!

What to Expect

  • Hands‑On Boatbuilding: We’ll supply basic recycled items (and encourage you to bring your own). Museum educators guide participants through buoyancy and balance tips.
  • Race Day Fun: Test your craft’s ability to float, carry cargo, and sprint down a short waterway. Tweak and re‑race as often as you like.
  • Sustainability in Action: Discover how creative reuse can turn “trash” into treasure while protecting our Great Lakes ecosystem.

Cleveland-Cliffs is a leading North America-based steel producer with focus on value-added sheet products, particularly for the automotive industry. The Company is vertically integrated from the mining of iron ore, production of pellets and direct reduced iron, and processing of ferrous scrap through primary steelmaking and downstream finishing, stamping, tooling, and tubing. Cleveland-Cliffs has the unique advantage of being self-sufficient in the production of raw materials for steelmaking. With ongoing initiatives to reduce waste, improve water conservation, and having already reduced carbon emissions by 25%, we are committed to being North America’s leader in steelmaking sustainability.
