Western European Style Paper Making - Sat/Sun, Oct 3 & 4, 2026
Make Beautiful Paper by Hand with Heather Peters
This course is an in-depth, two-day workshop (10am-4pm both days) exploring the basics of papermaking, including sheet-forming, fiber preparation, and how to dry paper. We will discuss historical practices and contemporary techniques, all while creating beautiful paper that can be used for printmaking, drawing, or painting, and as a stand-alone artwork. We will also go over all elements of paper production in a studio setting, including some clean-up and restocking the paper drying system at the end of each day. Once the paper is dry, it will be ready for pickup at the museum, with the option to mail it if pickup is not possible (or mailed for $15 extra).
The first day of class will introduce the tools of papermaking, processing fiber, setting up a papermaking station, and producing an even sheet of paper by hand. Class time will be dedicated to practicing sheet forming and production. We will go over options and ideas for the personalized inclusions to bring in on the second day. The second day of class will be a deeper analysis of each student’s desires for their paper, with an opportunity to individualize the paper with inclusions and other unique elements.
Overall, students will gain a deeper understanding of this technical and inspiring process and create a personal collection of beautiful, useful handmade paper. No experience is necessary, though an experienced paper maker will still enjoy the creative process and access to materials. All materials provided.
