Matana Roberts (they/them) is a dynamic instrumentalist and multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the mystical roots and intuitive, spirit-raising traditions of American creative expression. Their innovative work has forged new conceptual approaches to considering narrativity, history, and political expression within improvisatory structures. More information is available at www.matanaroberts.com.

Roberts will present a short solo instrumental performance from their ongoing Untitled series. They have often been invited to create live improvisatory sound painting works in tribute to iconic artists in conjunction with exhibitions of their work; some select artists they have honored include Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Pina Bausch, Benny Andrews, and Paul Robeson.

As she segued into fine arts, Mashonda graduated from the Christie’s Education Art Business program in 2016, the same year she founded ArtLeadHer and in 2021 she launched Art Genesis, two transformative platforms that champion artists at every stage, with a particular focus on women and emerging voices.
